In 1998 I became a Reiki Master. The title intimidated me for sure. Silly me, I thought in my naiveté, that it meant that I was supposed to have the answers. I was relatively new to energy work and in my mind too young to be the master of anything. It was what I call my “mountain top moment”. You know that moment when you feel invincible, and you want to shout it from the mountain top. “Hey world, I’ve got this secret, want to hear it?” I was on a mission to share what I had learned with anyone who’d lend me their ear. Labels aside, what it really meant, was that I had stepped onto the path of my life with devotion and commitment to live a life dedicated to my spiritual evolution.
Becoming the master alchemist of my life has been so many things, yet more that any aspect, it has been about claiming my personal power, taking responsibility for my life in every way and declaring my personal sovereignty over the choices I make. Some choices are better than others, I mean I am human after all. Yet each one, an opportunity to grow. I'm still learning to make each step an act of loving kindness to myself, and ultimately to others, twenty three years later.
Sound like a lot? It is.
It means being accountable. It's extremely messy. It means doing the inner work. It means say no. It means letting go…of almost everything so you can receive the boundless, limitless blessings of the universe with an open and humble heart.
The path of self- mastery is not all rainbows and unicorns There is no magic wand. It requires fierce courage. So many tears…offering yourself forgiveness again and again. However, the effort is worth it. The onus is on you to live the life you were made for, putting the power of transformation and of healing squarely in your lap. You can say yes to your heart’s desire and you can say no to what no longer serves you. The path of self-mastery gives you full permission to change your mind as many times as you wish.
I remember hearing the lyrics to a Switchfoot song back in the mid - 2000's called This Is Your Life. It rocked me to my core calling me to wake up and stay focused at a time when I wanted to throw in the towel on my spiritual life. I was at a crossroads and I had to choose. It was a simple question really. "This is your life. Are you who you want to be?"
Self-Mastery means not pointing the finger at anyone. Not your mother, father, sister, brother, lover, friend...It means looking inward. It means discipline and practice. It means setting boundaries. Then, setting new ones. It means doing the hard things. It means listening. It means feeling all the feelings you’ve been running from. It can be solitary and often times, lonely.
I like to think of it like a spiral stair case, with each new level, new awareness. It certainly isn't linear and it certainly isn’t easy, but my personal freedom and inner peace has been worth every tear I’ve shed since my initiation in 1998. You see, when I said yes, to becoming a Reiki Master, I said yes to my personal revolution. I said yes to loving myself with radical acceptance and to healing the broken places within me. If I wanted more from life, how could I show up otherwise?
I don’t believe we truly arrive at a destination on the path of self-mastery, because we are ever evolving, deepening, maturing, blossoming…
No mud, no lotus.
Becoming the CEO of your life is the up level, the glow up, accepting and owning your magnificence as your divine birthright. How much longer are you willing to deny and silence the still small voice that beckons you to shed the patterns that keep you from shining your light? You see, it’s not anyone else’s responsibility to do the healing work that will free you from the limiting beliefs of your own mind.
You have to claim it. You have to choose to say yes to you.
Everyone’s journey is unique. There is no one path. There is however, one question I have for you.
